“Good old Watson! You are the one fixed point in a changing age.” -Sherlock Holmes, His Last Bow

This quote would not leave my mind until I had made this thing.

    Bless the thing.

  2. I think it’s absolutely time for a female Doctor Who. I’m so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least ten wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role.

I found some tulips which reminded me of Sherlock recently. Here’s a magnificent poppy which, for me, evokes John. I found it on its own in a hedge and it was nearly as big as my hand.
An improbably large and beautifully unexpected version of something quite ordinary.

  5. Regarding Shipping

    brinanners:

Seeing a lot of kvetching and whingeing lately about people who ship non-canon non-heteronormative pairings.

“Why does everything have to be gay with you people?”

“Why all the emphasis on shipping?”

Here’s the thing: if you’re a person who enjoys heteronormative and/or canon ships, you have literally thousands at your disposal. Every show, every movie, every animated series, every comic and novel and radio program has at least one het ship that is, if not canon itself, at least understandable and likely within the context of the canon.

Those of us who like non-heteronormative romantic relationships? The number of options available to us in general media is pitifully small. We have a handful compared to your cornucopia. And then we have fandom.

Fandom is the only place where non-heteronormative romance is given almost equal representation. I’m not just talking gay, here; I’m talking kink, polyamorous relationships, non-binary gender expression and associated roles within relationships, trans* people in romantic relationships, interracial relationships, floppy power dynamics. I’m talking about everything that doesn’t fit the “boy meets girl, boy and girl are happy in their predefined romantic roles, they get married and have babies and live happily ever after” narrative that is so pervasive.

If you like that narrative, that’s awesome. I’m not trying to single anyone out for what they enjoy. Just please, stop bitching about people in fandom being a little overzealous with their non-canon, non-heteronormative ships. We can’t get it anywhere else.

It’s problematic—most things are. But this show tries hard.

No, that’s okay. I definitely needed to cry over a comic today. That is fine.

oooh I am crying right now

I got to the bottom and actually made a dumb vocalized “oh” noise and teared up. Jfc. Good comic.

Basically if you are not deeply critical of your own creative endeavors at least some of the time, you are probably either Gilderoy Lockhart or Steven Moffat.

Article on Amazon’s Kindle Worlds venture. (x). Quote:

The problem, as Perez and others see it, is that Amazon’s publishing program simply misunderstands what fandom is about. To them, the often collaborative process of fan fiction can’t be shoehorned into a single ebook file. “I’m going to write this story for my friend because she’s having a bad day, and then somebody is going to decide to draw fanart for me, or leave a two-page paragraph about how much they enjoyed it,” says Perez. But Amazon’s terms of service give it exclusive rights to stories and a license to use new elements in them — like original characters or specific settings. That likely means stories can’t be posted elsewhere or built upon by other fans.

The thing that really gets me about Star Trek is that almost everyone has a story about it. I had to taxi to and from the theatre today to see the new movie (no spoilers here!), and both ways, my cab drivers had tales to tell.

    The first guy’s a bit younger, and he’s thrilled…

Yes, the reblogged post, all of that. The stories. And for me, the dreams of space/the future/something not tied to the ground, you know? Not to mention, humanity’s capacity to evolve, to be… better, or really, find the good already there.

  12. But the final hour is called “Heroine” for a reason, as this is also a story about Joan Watson at the end of the day. In a case where Sherlock is at his weakest, and when he is unable to realize that the path to victory is failure because it means acknowledging that failure is even a possibility, it is Joan who sees more clearly. Joan isn’t afraid of Moriarty, but is rather protective of Sherlock (as both his sober companion and his partner), and the confusion that Moriarty’s emergence creates within Sherlock creates surety for Joan. If Sherlock only sees puzzles and Moriarty only sees games, Watson sees actual people: her interest in Sherlock is human, the kind of relationship that Moriarty can’t even imagine (referring to her as a mascot at one point in their lunch date). While the truth about Moriarty robs Sherlock of the most striking, human connection he believed he had ever made, the resulting investigation reaffirms a more powerful connection in his partnership with Joan, the newly discovered species of Euglossa Watsonia a metaphor for what happens when an extremely rare bee miraculously unexpectedly finds a compatible partner.

You will never get a fan to care more about clothes, cars, shoes, or household products than they do about whether Sterek is going to happen on Teen Wolf.

Why Yahoo can buy Tumblr, but it can’t buy Fandom

The unspoken truth behind Yahoo’s much-touted bid to court Tumblr’s younger demographic is that for all intents and purposes, Tumblr culture is fandom culture. There are still plenty of other spaces where fandom exists, but we have never had such a megalithic and central social platform so visibly united under one umbrella. …

Even as Yahoo insists nothing will change, business analysts and media experts are speculating that the company intends to plumb Tumblr for its advertising potential. But if that’s the case, Yahoo should know that when you market to fandom, you have to adopt a whole new way of thinking about marketing, brand advertising, and consumer loyalty. [READ MORE]

(please read this article omg i have never wanted to *drop mic* until this day)

Karaz01: I don’t have a stone to throw in this battle, but that quotation made me laugh out loud. It’s strange to watch the Tumblr/Yahoo shenanigans from the perspective of not giving a shit. After years of watching my beloved Livejournal get stripped away year after year until it became both unrecognizable and an empty husk of what it once was, I feel only a certain sense of inevitability regarding the “downfall” of tumblr. It was only a matter of time.

Fandom, as it always has, will survive. (Though I’m not sure what’s more annoying: being advertised to via Yahoo or having all of our works/activities made villainous via Livejournal.)

Emmagrant01: ^^THIS. OMG, for serious. And yeah, was anyone else on a fandom Yahoo group that got deleted? Yes, DELETED. Every single fic and post and idea and bit of fannish squee in that segment of fandom, completely gone forever, just because someone at Yahoo decided your fandom violated their TOS. I hate to sound like a BOFQ, but good lord, the STORY of fandom is how we’ve been kicked out of every decent social networking platform ever, and then we picked up our fics and arts, dusted them off, and went on to find to the next place to hang out. We’ve been around for decades, and we’re still here, and we’re not going anywhere.

    (via emmagrant01)

ughhhhh yes, so much yes to all of this. (And there’s a reason, historically, that bitter old fandom queens are bitter. <3)

By now, most of the Elementary fandom has probably already seen or been spoiled for the season finale double-whammy that was “The Woman/Heroine”. But just in case someone hasn’t, abandon ship now if you want to remain unspoiled, because this bit of rambling meta is going to lay out just how…
